"During my PhD, I am studying neurotransmitters in pancreatic islets and how they are impacted during diabetes. This award will allow me to learn from two different reference centers on diabetes research, the ADI and the Helmholtz Diabetes Center, which will certainly contribute to my development as a scientist."
Janyne Johnson
2020 ADI / HRD Studentship: Janyne Johnson. Supervisor Dr Peter Light (ADI Member) / German Lab Dr Stephan Speier. "I am a graduate student at the University of Alberta working closely with the Alberta Diabetes Institute to study Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 (GLP-1) and its functional role in the human pancreas. The ADI has given me many unforgettable experiences as a summer student, and I am excited to embark on my new journey with the ADI and HRD to pursue my PhD in Pharmacology. Using the skills and connections gained throughout this project, I hope to one day become a clinical scientist and continue contributing to the important research and dialogue associated with nutrition, obesity, and diabetes. Qiming Tan
2020 ADI / HRD Studentship: Qiming Tan. Supervisor Dr Andrea Haqq (ADI Member) / German Lab Dr Timo Muller. “I have a strong research interest in the role of the gut microbiome in the pathogenesis and treatment of childhood obesity. Under the guidance of Dr. Andrea Haqq, I am investigating the effects of dietary fibers on hyperphagia, metabolic health, inflammatory state, and the gut microbiota profile of children with Prader-Willi syndrome. The Helmholtz Research School for Diabetes award provides me a great opportunity to work in a basic science research lab where I can learn a variety of in vivo, ex vivo, and in vitro techniques and gain some mechanistic insights into energy homeostasis and glucose metabolism. This will help me to build a solid understanding of all aspects of obesity and diabetes and set the foundation for my future career as a translational researcher in the fields of obesity and diabetes.”
Emad Yuzbashian
2020 ADI / HRD Studentship: Emad Yuzbashian. Dr Cathy Chan (ADI Member) / German Lab Dr Siegfried Ussar. “As a Nutritional science PhD Student, I am working under the supervision of Prof. Catherine Chan. My main interest is to understand the impact of dietary intake on the prevention and treatment of diabetes. Since 2010, I have been working in the Nutrition and Endocrine Research Center at the Research Institute for Endocrine Sciences and involved in quite a few research projects, including nutritional epidemiology, clinical trials, as well as molecular nutrition. Our current research focuses on elucidating the metabolic effects of different types of dairy products and exploring underlying molecular mechanisms of phosphatidylcholine and lysophosphatidyl-choline in relation to insulin sensitivity. I am honored to be receiving the 2020 ADI / HRD Studentship which will offer me a fantastic opportunity to expand my research practice in an international environment.
